Fats, oils and grease (FOG) can be a major problem for the City’s sanitary sewers. About 75 percent of sewer stoppages are attributed to FOG buildup. When FOG is discharged to the sewer, it cools and accumulates on the sidewalls of the pipes. Over time, the accumulation of grease restricts the flow and causes blockages in the sewer, clogging the pipes and constricting the flow of wastewater. This can lead to overflowing manholes onto City streets or in residential yards becoming an environmental and health hazard. FOG can also cause basement backups costing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in damage and clean-up costs at the property owner’s expense.
In the majority of cases, a special rider will need to be added to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy to cover damages related to sewage backups or water damage. This optional coverage is usually not very expensive, but you must request that it be added to your policy. Check with your insurance agent about this policy provision.
As with the majority of municipalities in the country, the city cannot assume full financial responsibility for damages resulting from sewage backups, since most stoppages are related to conditions that are beyond the city’s control. That is why it is important that property owners confirm that they are adequately insured – particularly if areas of their home lie below ground level.
No, the due date cannot be changed. The due date is fixed and based on the address and the route set for the most efficient monthly reading of the meters.
Providing there are no problems with the service at the property, services can be set the day of request when the request is processed prior to 4:30 p.m.
After twelve months of continuous service with two or less late penalties and no shut offs, the deposit plus any interest owed will be mailed out to the account holder. If there were more than two penalties during the previous twelve months, the deposit will be held on the account until twelve consecutive months have passed with two penalties or less.
If you relocate within the City, the deposit may be transferred from your current utility account to the account at the new location. If you relocate outside of the City service area, the deposit will be posted against the final bill and any remaining deposit will be mailed to your forwarding address. If there is a balance remaining after the deposit is posted against the amount, it will show on the final billing statement.
In order to set services at a different address, the current account must be paid to a zero balance. Your billing cycle is always a month in arrears, so you will have at least one more bill after you move. In some cases, you may be billed up to a month and a half depending upon the move and billing cycle dates.
The proof of residency is required every time service is set in your name. As long as your name has not changed, your identification may already be on file, if your records have been updated within the last five years.
The monthly user charge is calculated on an average of monthly water usage by the customer for the months of December, January and February. The average is calculated and effective with the utility billing beginning the following March 15. The winter months are used to set an average in order to avoid the summer high usage months in fairness to the customer. A new average is determined annually.
The deposit for both electricity and water is $150.00. If the landlord pays the water, the deposit is $100.00. If you had a previous utility account that was sent to a collection agency to collect past due payments, there will be an additional amount required for the deposit or the past due amount may have to be paid in full.
